Letters to Oneself

This online exhibition presents a selection of drawing books by local artist Philip Trusttum completed after the February 2011 earthquake. Trusttum has filled no fewer than fifty books with around 2000 drawings, which he completed using the humble felt-pen. Bright and colourful, many of the extraordinary figures found in the exhibition are based on the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch (c.1450–1516). As in Bosch’s work, there is a sense of psychological anguish and malice in Trusttum’s drawings in which cute children’s toys are pulled together in bizarre and sometimes malevolent combinations through the process of drawing.
